Lessons & Tours |

... we'll show you how to SUP then we'll show you the wonders of Jervis Bay!
|
Who can enjoy this sport
Anyone with enough physical fitness to take a one hour walk and with basic swimming skills (ie. able to swim 50m) can participate in this sport. To ensure you get the most out of your lesson we have limited our standard class size to four students and recommend that children be over 12 years of age to participate.
What to bring
We will provide you with a quality flatwater cruising board, a paddle and a rash shirt (or wetsuit in winter). You will need to bring appropriate swimwear, towel, sunblock and a great sense of humour.
Leave all your self-conciousness at home because you are going to fall in at least once but you are going to love it!
When
Stand Up Paddling is best enjoyed in the morning before the wind picks up. Wind is the enemy of the stand up paddler as not only does it make the paddling much harder, but once the water surface is rippled you miss the beauty of the marine environment below. We want all of our paddlers to achieve success in their first lesson so we offer our lessons and tours early in the morning.
Yes it is hard to get out of bed early when you are on holidays but this activity is well worth it!
Over summer lessons & tours are available at the following times daily:
7.00am – 8.00am – the best time of day for glassy water and a peaceful environment
8.30am – 9.30am – still okay but surface a little more rippled and more boats going past
10.00am – 11.00am – okay but often a steady breeze reduces water visiblity and paddling is a little harder
After 11am the north-easterly sea breeze has usually kicked in: lessons & tours can still be conducted but the venue usually has to move to where there is good shelter.
Participants are asked to arrive at the designated meeting point
fifteen (15) minutes prior to official start time to allow
for paperwork and distribution of equipment.
This will maximise your time in the water.
Lessons & tours go ahead rain, hail or shine.
Some of our best dolphin experiences have occurred on overcast and rainy days!
Refunds will be provided however if the session has to be cancelled due to strong winds, severe storms or lightning.
Standard Lesson & Tour Package - duration approx 1hour 15 minutes. Clients meet at the designated launch point, complete necessary paperwork and are allocated equipment. The lesson begins on the shore with a short induction and safety overview followed by instruction on how to mount, dismount, paddle, turn, stop etc. These skills are then put into practice on the water until all clients are proficient and comfortable. A tour is then conducted as a round trip anywhere between 1.5 - 3km based on client confidence, available time and conditions on the day.
Hyams Hike & Paddle Tour - duration approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. Lesson component as above however the paddling tour only goes one way. Starting from either Hyams Beach or Greenfields Beach, clients paddle around the rocky headlands that separate the spectacular white-sand beaches of Chinamans, Boatramp and Sailors beaches. Along the way you will paddle over beautiful reefs bursting with marine life and for the really adventurous there is even an opportunity to paddle a freshwater billabong. At the end of the 2km paddle, clients leave their boards and start the walk back to their point of origin. A little over 2km long, this moderate hike passes through a diverse range of plant communities including scribbly gum forest, teatree heathland and wetland areas. Vantage points along the way offer spectacular views across the bay. For those starting this tour from Greenfields Beach, the Hike and Paddle can be broken up with a short coffee break at the popular Hyams Beach Cafe.
Huskisson Paddle & Plod Tour - duration approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Depending on tides the tour will commence at either Woollamia Boat Ramp or Sharknet Beach at Huskisson. Lesson component will be the same as for the basic lesson and tour package followed by an easy one-way 'tour' travelling with the current. During the 2.5km of paddling over the pristine waters of Currumbene Creek where birdlife and marine life abound, you may see some of the resident giant stingrays that often gracefully glide up to us on the boards. The tour passes varied marine environments including mangroves, seagrass beds, deep channels and rocky reefs. At the end of the paddling component you will be picked up in a horse drawn carriage for your peaceful and relaxing return journey: clippity clopping your way along quiet country roads and through the village of Huskisson to your point of origin.
